Transformer core helps to effectively transform magnetic flux in primary winding to the secondary winding. The core is made up thin slices that highly permeable material. In this video, we will go through different types of core construction.
Transformer can be broadly classified as core and shell type.
The construction of three-phase core type transformer is shown here.It is evident, the primary and secondary winding sit on the same limb.
In the shell type transformer, the core surrounds the winding. The construction of three-phase shell type transformer is shown here.
It is evident that the core design is more economical and easy to manufacture compared to shell type design. But for high power rating and voltage applications, the shell type design is preferred, because its better short-circuit strength. It also exhibits better power to weight ratio.
Short-circuit strength: The core of shell type transformer is constructed with of three limbs (legs). This design increases the mechanical strength of the core. The electromagnetic forces that can occur between the current carrying conductors during the case of short-circuit.
Shell type transformer gives a good support against the electromagnetic forces.
